Measure Your Sofa for Delivery and Room Fit
Check your space and measure confidently so your sofa fits perfectly.
Step 1: What Sofa Measurements Matter Before You Buy
Before measuring your home, it's important to understand which sofa measurements matter — and why.
Furniture dimensions generally fall into two categories: assembled size and delivery (boxed) size. Each serves a different purpose.
Assembled Sofa Measurements for Your Room
Make sure your sofa fits comfortably in your living space once fully set up.
How to measure assembled dimensions:- Measure overall width, depth, and height in your living space
- Measure clearance from walls, windows, and walkways
- Measure fit with rugs, coffee tables, and surrounding furniture
- Measuring width only and forgetting depth
- Not accounting for arm thickness or back height
- Ignoring extra space needed for lounging or reclining
- Outline your sofa footprint with painter's tape to see its real-world impact.
- Consider moving other furniture temporarily to check maneuvering space.
Boxed Sofa Measurements for Delivery
Ensure the sofa can physically make it into your home safely.
How to check boxed dimensions:
- Measure all doorways, entries, and hallways along the path.
- Check elevator and stairwell clearance.
- Compare with the boxed dimensions provided by WJS Home.
- Assuming the box is smaller than the sofa
- Measuring door width but ignoring height
- Overlooking low ceilings or sharp turns
- Take photos of narrow spots and share with WJS Home delivery team.
- If possible, remove doors or temporary obstacles to gain extra space.
| Number of Pieces | |
|---|---|
| Sofa | 4-5 |
| Chair | 1 |
| Ottoman | 1 |
| Coffee Table | 1 |
| Bristo Table | 1 |
| Dining Table | 3-4 |
| TV Stand | 1-2 |
Step 2: How to Measure the Path from Truck to Living Room
Even if the sofa fits your room, it must still make it from the truck to its final spot. Measuring the full delivery path is essential.
Measure Your Delivery Path Safely
Ensure your sofa can pass through every corner without damage.
How to measure:- Walk step by step from entrance to final placement spot using a tape measure.
- Measure all narrow points, corners, and turns.
- Check ceiling height in tight or low-clearance areas.
- Only measuring straight paths.
- Forgetting wall fixtures, railings, or switches.
- Overlooking uneven flooring or thresholds.
- Mark tight corners with painter's tape.
- Temporarily remove decorations or baseboards to gain clearance.
- Share photos with the delivery team for advice.
Doorway and Hallway Clearance Guidelines
Doorways are the most common failure point for deliveries.
How to measure:
- Measure the clear width of each doorway (frame to frame)
- Measure the clear height from the floor to the lowest obstruction
- Measure hallway width, especially at narrow spots
- Measure the clearance depth from the doorway opening to the opposite wall
- Measuring with doors not fully open
- Forgetting door trim, molding, or wall edges
- Measuring width but skipping height
- Assuming hallways are the same width everywhere
- Missing tight turns right after doorways
- Keep a small level handy to check for angled doorways.
- If needed, plan a rotation strategy for moving the sofa through tight turns.
Elevator Size and Clearance Measurements
Elevator size limits what can be safely transported.
How to measure:
- Measure elevator door width and height
- Measure interior depth and width
- Measure diagonal clearance (corner to corner)
- Assuming freight elevators are larger than they are
- Forgetting interior handrails or control panels
- Bring a photo of the elevator dimensions to the delivery team.
- Check for objects like lights or panels that may reduce usable space.
Stairwell and Landing Measurements
Stairs require additional clearance for angles and turns.
How to measure:
- Measure stair width.
- Check ceiling height above stairs.
- Measure landing size and turning space.
- Ignoring tight turns at landings.
- Forgetting angled ceilings or handrails.
- Consider the diagonal measurement of the sofa for turning tight corners.
- Remove rugs or obstacles on stairs for safer maneuvering.
All deliveries are done by two people. They cannot remove doors from hinges or hoist items
Final Room Placement Measurements
Make sure the sofa fits your space comfortably once delivered.
How to measure:
- Measure the final placement area
- Measure clearance for walking paths
- Measure distance from walls, radiators, or vents
- Choosing a sofa that looks too large for the space
- Blocking natural walkways or room flow
- Outline the sofa footprint with painter's tape.
- Place temporary chairs or boxes to simulate the sofa volume.
Step 3: How to Prepare Your Home for Sofa Delivery
The final check before delivery day to ensure a smooth, damage-free experience.
Clearing Hallways and Doorways for Delivery
Preparing your home ensures a smooth and safe delivery.
How to prepare:- Remove picture frames, mirrors, or fragile items from hallway walls
- Roll up area rugs or secure them to prevent tripping
- Protect floors with cardboard or a drop cloth if possible
- Not securing pets before delivery
- Leaving clutter or tripping hazards in walkways
- Enlist family members to help guide the delivery team.
- Keep a flashlight handy for dimly lit hallways or corners.
